Ami, a friend, someone you get along with. 

Copain, also means friend but made up of two words. Co taken as "with" and "pain" as bread. Literally it means someone you share bread with but can be taken to mean someone you share many more things with. 

It's from medieval times when everyone sitting at the table would use bread as a plate rather than other materials. It would soak up the juices and then you eat it.
