What’s in Your Social Media Handbag (… or Man Purse)?

February 20th, 2008

Not sure if you’ve noticed yet, but I’m a girl. A girl who is into “girly” things. Things like glitter, makeup, shoes and shimmer. Yet, here I am, hanging out in this dude-filled social media world and working in the tech PR industry. Spaces not exactly known for their sparkle and lip glossiness. And that’s more than fine with me, but in my opinion–and I know at least a few ladies who would agree–there might not be enough metaphors that capture how we chicks think (read: shop and accessorize).

glazed_espresso1.jpgSo, here it is. Not a social media tool kit, not a social media tackle box, not a pair of social media Wrangler jeans. Me? I have a social media handbag, thanks.

In my social media handbag, the essentials are my Twitter, Facebook, ooVoo, Skype, del.icio.us and Google Reader. These are like my phone, T pass, credit card, lip balm, license and keys. Every girl has her essential items she needs to survive away from home–the things you use all the time and can’t live without. But then you’ve got the extra stuff that you just like having with you. You don’t always take these things everywhere, but you usually have them around just in case. For me, that’s Flickr, Utterz and Seesmic. My mini mirror, tissues and umbrella. Guys, I know you sometimes wonder what the hell we need these handbags for, but trust me, girls get what I’m talking about. And I mean, this could be taken in a variety of ways depending on your accessory personality–you could have a social media man purse, social media evening clutch, social media fannypack…

Girls, this is how I conceptualize my social media “stuff.” I’m a visual thinker. And I like pretty things.

What’s in your social media handbag?

I love you post! Can’t believe all of that fits in your purse ;-)

Love the metaphor…and the name of the bag ;)

Thanks for the trackback. Maybe I should create a real social media handbag just for you. It can be a laptop case with pockets for your headset, SMS capable phone and, of course, your makeup to prep for those ooVoo video chats.

Check out the Galco Bebe for a handbag with some oomph to it.

It may not be 100% fashionable, but the contents mean business :)

I prefer ‘Social Media Clutch Bag’ because it is small, simple, and never goes out of style. (Sidenote: Thanks for making me the “who” (: I do agree that there aren’t enough ladies expressing their sides of bloglife.)

As for me, I would consider YouTube the keys in my D&G. Although I don’t video-blog myself, checking out video-bloggers like Rooftop Comedy and HappySlip are my default boredom-killers that I couldn’t live without (to break down the metaphor: no youtube = no keys, no access to my apartment = no place to live = impossible!). My ID and credit cards are clearly Facebook, because it is the first thing I check in the morning to make sure everything is still the way it was from last night (e.g. no missing ATM cards or unwanted phone numbers). And last but not least, my cell phone. I don’t like using my cell phone often, but when I do it is always to call the ones I love to check up on and see how they’re doing. My recently dialed calls list, you ask? SocialHoneyComb is obvi in my “top five” :)

Add to that Jaiku, Plaxo, LinkedIn, Tumblr, StumbleUpon, Grand Central, NewsGator and an occasional TeeBeeDee and at this point, it’s carry-on luggage.

Haha, Dad, I’ve always been this way!

Cheers Amanda! From another ‘girly-girl’ who hangs all day with the dudes in the Finance world, but loves her girly things nonetheless. And who is teaching her daughter how to be a sweet, feminine lady in what is still, in some professions, a dude’s world.

If I accomplish little else, it will be that!

    Great post.

I absolutely love your picks for your social media handbag. You forgot one thing though, Google Notebook. It is an absolute must for anyone who looks for specific things on webpages. You can highlight a couple words & add just them, with the URL, to your notebook.

    Hey Amanda,
Great metaphor. The SM space is filled with guys, so I always appreciate when I come across a girl who knows what she’s talking about! What i love even more is the fact that you picked the Rebecca Minkoff morning after bag. I am obsessed with RM right now and just got a morning after mini.
    anyway, rock on!
